The World Bank represents a community dedicated to global progress and development. There is tremendous synergy and alignment with Story Tapestries’ commitment to fostering educational growth, and personal and community development through the transformative power of the arts.

Story Tapestries addresses vital community issues for millions of people of all ages and abilities using collaboration and the arts, in all forms, to create and deliver tailored, accessible programs. Through workshops, performances, community art-making projects, professional development training and more, we work with individuals and organizations to creatively address critical issues such as: STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs that support caring for a livable planet; programs and services that support Women and Girls; Youth Workforce Development programs; Positive Mental Health support, and more.

Challenge 1: Our kids struggle to recognize and control big emotions, and too often, this gets in the way of learning and succeeding at school. Engaging youth in artistic activities that get them moving and help them explore and understand feelings is an incredible way to share tools that help them better control their emotions.

A Solution: The nonprofit Story Tapestries does this through their program, CHART: Creative Health ARTs experiences. During their lunch break, students who are really struggling have an opportunity to work with a professional artist. They have so much fun exploring songwriting, photography, writing and performing poetry, and more. Most importantly, they increase their capacity to experience and share emotions healthily, leading to healthier relationships and greater academic success.

Challenge 2: Our children are facing unprecedented declines in academic achievement, social-emotional development, and mental health. Alarming statistics paint a troubling picture. In Montgomery County, just 46% of kindergarteners met readiness standards in 2023-24, while the struggles persist as they grow older, with only 12% of English language learners proficient in English Language Arts in 2023 – significant given multilingual learners represent a quarter of the student population.

A Solution: Enter Story Tapestries! We believe in the power of the arts to empower, uplift, and transform. Our “Write Your Story” program is a shining example. It propels children forward, fostering their growth and helping them overcome challenges. Evaluative reports show remarkable improvements in literacy skills, social-emotional learning, and fine and gross motor skills, with the most significant improvement seen in students farthest behind. Teachers discover innovative approaches and earn career-boosting course credits, while families bond and create together, engaging parents deeply in their child’s progress.
